Planning your wedding and looking for the perfect wedding cake in Hertfordshire? Here’s everything you need to know, from choosing your style and flavours to deciding how many tiers you need and when to book.
After more than 16 years of making cakes, I’ve learnt that choosing your wedding cake isn’t simply about finding something beautiful to look at. Your cake should feel like you, fit naturally into your wedding day and, most importantly, taste absolutely delicious.
At Heaven is a Cupcake, we love creating wedding cakes that are as individual as the couples they are made for. Whether you’re dreaming of a classic tiered cake, a tower of cupcakes or something completely bespoke, this guide will hopefully make choosing your wedding cake a little easier.

How much does a wedding cake cost in Hertfordshire?
This is usually one of the first questions couples ask, and understandably so!
There isn’t really a one-size-fits-all price for a wedding cake because every cake is different and everyone has different costs. The price can depend on the number of tiers, the number of portions, the design and the amount of time involved in creating it.
A simple buttercream cake will generally require less time than a highly detailed bespoke design with handmade decorations, sugar flowers or intricate piping.
Things that will affect the price of your wedding cake:
- The number of wedding guests
- The cake flavour and fillings
- Buttercream or fondant icing
- Handmade decorations
- Fresh or sugar flowers
- Bespoke models and personalised details
- Delivery and set-up
- The complexity of the design
My advice is always to have an idea of your overall wedding cake budget before you start looking at designs. We can then help you design a wedding cake that meets your needs.

How far in advance should you book your wedding cake?
Popular dates, particularly during the Spring, Summer and early Autumn, can get booked well in advance but we don’t tend to take bookings too far ahead.
Ideally, I’d recommend starting to look at wedding cakes around 9–12 months before your wedding, although it is always worth asking even if your wedding is much sooner.
Sometimes we have availability for shorter-notice weddings, but it depends on the date and the complexity of the cake. It’s always worth getting in touch

What style of wedding cake should you choose?
This is the fun bit!
There are so many different wedding cake styles available now that it can be difficult to know where to start.
Buttercream wedding cakes
We specialise in buttercream cakes and it’s certainly one of our favourites. Not only is it versatile and modern, it tastes delicious.
You can have a beautifully smooth, classic finish or something more textured and modern. Buttercream works beautifully with fresh flowers, faux flowers, piping, edible gold leaf and other decorative details. One of our most popular buttercream cake is the buttercream ridge design. It gives an elegant but classic feel and makes a really beautiful wedding cake when fresh flowers are added to finish it off.

Semi-naked wedding cakes
I’ve been making semi naked cakes for over 10 years and I don’t think they will ever go out of style.
A semi-naked cake has a lighter covering of buttercream, allowing some of the cake underneath to show through.
They work particularly well for rustic, country or relaxed weddings and look beautiful decorated with fresh flowers and foliage or fresh fruit like the one below. One of our favourite venues to make semi naked wedding cakes for is the stunning Tewinbury Farm, where we are a recommended supplier.

Classic iced wedding cakes
If you’re looking for something more traditional and polished, a fondant-covered wedding cake gives you a beautifully smooth canvas for decoration. You can really create some intricate, bespoke designs with fondant wedding cakes if your budget allows.

VINTAGE WEDDING CAKES
One of my favourite things to do is pipe with buttercream which is one of the reasons I love these vintage wedding cakes. The lambeth cake trend is back with a vengeance and I am here for it. It is so versatile and you can really go wild with the colours OR you can stay with something classic & vintage with a modern twist. Single tier and heart cakes are particular popular in our vintage wedding cake style. They also go great with cupcake towers.

cUPCAKE AND BROWNIE TOWERS
Back in 2010 when I started the business all I made were cupcakes, so of course, cupcakes hold a special place in my heart. Cupcake towers are a great idea for a wedding cake because it really takes the stress out of serving. Cupcakes are so easy to grab and go, especially when you’re headed to the dance floor.
Not a fan of cake? Try a brownie tower or a bespoke dessert table. The options are endless!

Something completely bespoke
And then there are the cakes where the usual rules go out of the window!
We love creating bespoke designs based on a couple’s personalities, wedding venue, flowers, stationery, hobbies or even a favourite place.
Your wedding cake doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s and we can’t wait to help you create it.
What flavours should you choose for your wedding cake?
This is one of the best bits about choosing your wedding cake, you get to try as many flavours as you like!
Some of the flavours we love include
- Classic victoria sponge with jam & vanilla buttercream
- Chocolate fudge with chocolate buttercream
- Lemon with zesty lemon curd & buttercream
- Carrot cake with tangy cream cheese frosting
- Raspberry with raspberry jam & white chocolate buttercream
One of my favourite things about creating a tiered wedding cake is that each tier doesn’t have to be the same flavour.
We usually suggest choosing a “universal” flavour along with a couple of flavours that you love the most. After all, it’s YOUR wedding day.

How many tiers do you need for your wedding cake?
The number of tiers you need will depend on how many guests you are serving and how much cake you would like to provide.
But there is also another consideration: how you want your cake to look.
You might have 80 guests but love the look of a tall three-tier cake. Or you might have 150 guests and want a smaller display cake alongside additional portions served from the kitchen.
This is where we come in, we will help you decide the size and number of tiers you need that will suit your needs best.
Don’t forget about dietary requirements
If you or your guests have special dietary requirements, it’s important to discuss these with us in advance.
We can cater for those with intolerances and dietary preferences such as vegan, made without gluten and made without dairy. We don’t think people should miss out on cake just because they have special dietary preferences.
It’s important to remember that our kitchen is not free from allergens, however, so please ensure you make us aware of any serious allergies as we may not be able to cater for these.
How does wedding cake delivery work?
Don’t worry, you don’t have to turn up in full wedding attire and pick up your wedding cake on the day. Let us do the heavy lifting (literally!)
At Heaven is a Cupcake, we deliver wedding cakes across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and North London, and we can arrange delivery and set-up so that you don’t have to worry about transporting your cake on the morning of your wedding. We will discuss with you when it’s best to deliver to make sure your wedding cake has the best possible chance!
After all, you’ve got enough to think about!
Wedding cakes for Hertfordshire venues
Hertfordshire has some beautiful wedding venues, and I now consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to Herts Wedding Venues!
The style of your venue can be a great starting point for your cake design.
A grand, traditional venue might suit a classic elegant cake, while a relaxed barn or countryside setting could work beautifully with textured buttercream, fresh flowers or a more natural design.
We’ve had the pleasure of making wedding cakes for couples celebrating at venues including St Michael’s Manor, Fanhams Hall Tewinbury Farm, Sopwell House, Aldwickbury Golf Club, Coltsfoot Farm Country Retreat, Milling Barn, London Shenley Club, Shendish Manor, The Hub on Verulam, Aubrey Park, Hunton Park and Hanbury Manor.

When should you finalise your wedding cake design?
You don’t necessarily need to have every tiny detail decided when you first book your cake.
In fact, your ideas may change as your wedding planning develops.
We will arrange a video consultation approx 3-6 months before your big day when you should know how many guests you’ll have, their dietary requirements and of course, what kind of colours/vibe you’re going for. We will then chat through your ideas and polish all the finer details to make sure you get the wedding cake you deserve.
Questions to ask your wedding cake designer
When you’re choosing your wedding cake supplier, I’d recommend asking:
How many weddings do you make cakes for each year?
Experience is important, particularly when it comes to large or complex wedding cakes.I have lost count of how many wedding cakes we have done over the years but during busy periods we can do 4 or 5 weddings over a long weekend.
Do you deliver and set up the cake?
It’s worth knowing this before you book, as transporting a multi-tier wedding cake yourself isn’t something we’d recommend unless you have a big car!
Can you accommodate dietary requirements?
Discuss any allergies or dietary requirements at the beginning rather than leaving them until later.
How far do you travel?
Check whether your cake designer delivers to your venue and what their delivery charges are. We tend to stay within an hour of St Albans to make sure your cake arrives in one piece.
Can I have different flavours for different tiers?
For most couples, this is a lovely way of giving guests a choice.
How far in advance should I book?
Popular dates can fill quickly, so don’t be afraid to ask.
Can you create a completely bespoke design?
If you have something unusual in mind, make sure your cake designer is comfortable creating something from scratch.
Your wedding cake should be as individual as your wedding
We know it’s easy to get AI to design your cake or to copy one that you’ve seen on Pinterest but don’t forget we are here to help design something to suit you. You are very welcome to choose one of our previous designs and if you have found something you
